Genesis 12:1-5

1The Lord said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your kinsmen, and your father's house, and go to a country that I will show you. 2I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you and make your name so great that it shall be used in blessings:
3Those that bless you I will bless
those that curse you, I will execrate.
All the families on earth
will pray to be blessed as you are blessed.'
4And so Abram set out as the Lord had bidden him, and Lot went with him. 5Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Harran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the property they had collected, and all the dependants they had acquired in Harran, and they started on their journey to Canaan.

Psalm 23

1The Lord is my shepherd; I shall want nothing.
2He makes me lie down in green pastures,
and leads me beside the waters of peace;
3he renews life within me,
and for his name's sake guides me in the right path.
4Even though I walk through a valley dark as death
I fear no evil, for thou art with me,
thy staff and thy crook are my comfort.
5Thou spreadest a table for me in the sight of my enemies;
thou hast richly bathed my head with oil,
and my cup runs over.
6Goodness and love unfailing, these will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
my whole life long.

Isaiah 55:1-3

1Come, all who are thirsty, come, fetch water;
come, you who have no food, buy corn and eat;
come and buy, not for money, not for a price.
2Why spend money and get what is not bread,
why give the price of your labour and go unsatisfied?
Only listen to me and you will have good food to eat,
and you will enjoy the fat of the land.
3Come to me and listen to my words,
hear me, and you shall live:
I will make a covenant with you, this time for ever,
to love you faithfully as I loved David.

Mark 1:9-13

1961 & 1970 Edition

9It happened at this time that Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. 10At the moment when he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. 11And a voice spoke from heaven: 'Thou art my Son, my Beloved; on thee my favour rests.'
12Thereupon the Spirit sent him away into the wilderness, 13and there he remained for forty days tempted by Satan. He was among the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

John 1:1-5

1961 Edition

1When all things began, the Word already was. The Word dwelt with God, and what God was, the Word was. 2The Word, then, was with God at the beginning, 3and through him all things came to be; no single thing was created without him. 4All that came to be was alive with his life, and that life was the light of men. 5The light shines on in the dark, and the darkness has never mastered it.

1 Corinthians 15:1-8

1961 Edition

1And now, my brothers. I must remind you of the gospel that I preached to you; the gospel which you received, on which you have taken your stand, and which is now bringing you salvation. 2Do you still hold fast the Gospel as I preached it to you? If not, your conversion was in vain.
3First and foremost, I handed on to you the facts which had been imparted to me: that Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the scriptures; 4that he was buried; that he was raised to life on the third day, according to the scriptures; 5and that he appeared to Cephas, and afterwards to the Twelve. 6Then he appeared to over five hundred of our brothers at once, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 7Then he appeared to James, and afterwards to all the apostles.
8In the end he appeared even to me; though this birth of mine was monstrous,

8In the end he appeared even to me. It was like an abnormal birth;
