9At that point in John's ministry, he was approached by a man named Jesus. Jesus had come all the way from Nazareth in Galilee, to be baptized in the Jordan like all the rest.
10Just as Jesus was being lifted up out of the water, he saw the skies split open, and God's own spirit, like a dove, coming down to rest upon him. 11At that moment a voice rang out from the open skies, "You are my beloved son. You bring me such joy."
12Immediately after that, the Holy Spirit took hold of Jesus and led him out into the desert. 13For forty days his heart and his strength were tested over and over again by Satan. The animals of the desert were there with him, and the angels gave him comfort.
