Mark 1:9-13

The New Testament A Devotional Paraphrase - 1990

9It was during this time that Jesus left Nazareth, which is in the province of Galilee, and made His way down to Judea to the Jordan river where John was. He too was baptized.
10When He came up out of the water, He saw what seemed like an opening right into heaven and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove coming down.
11This was followed by a voice from heaven saying, "You are my only begotten Son. And I'm pleased with what you've just done."
12From here Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to a most desolate place in the wilderness to fast, to pray, and to prepare for His mission.
13He was there for forty days surrounded by all kinds of wild animals. He was severely tempted by the devil to use his divine powers selfishly. When it was all over, He was so exhausted that angels from heaven came to revive His dying body and give Him strength to begin His ministry.

Jesus Starts His Ministry

9-11. One day Jesus went to the Jordan River to be baptized by John. As He came up out of the water, the sky opened, and the power of the Holy Spirit came down upon Jesus. The light above His head was shaped like a dove. Then God spoke from heaven and said, "You are My own Son, whom I love. I am very pleased with You!"
12-13. From there Jesus went into the wilderness to fast and pray to prepare for His ministry. He was there for forty days, alone, except for the wild animals. While He was there, Satan greatly tempted Jesus, but He refused to give in. Then God sent angels to take care of Jesus and to strengthen Him.

The New Testament A Devotional Paraphrase - 1990

1Before the beginning of everything, going further back in time than can be imagined, the "Word of God" was there. And the "Word of God" stood by the side of God. And the Word was fully God.
2There never was a time when the "Word of God" was not with God.
3All things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made.
4He is the Source of life, and His own life here on earth was the Light that brought spiritual hope to all men.
5This Light was seen among us and shone into our mortal darkness; yet the dark minds of men planned to extinguish this Light, but did not succeed.

1 Corinthians 15:1-8

The New Testament A Devotional Paraphrase - 1990

1Now, my brothers, I want to say something about the good news which I've shared with you, which you've accepted, on which you stand,
2and by which you're saved. There are some things I've told you that are basic and that you need to keep in mind, otherwise your faith has no meaning.
3What I've shared with you, I didn't originate. I recveived it just as you did. The fact remains, and always will, that Christ died for our sins, and this was according to Scripture.
4He was buried and on the third day, rose again, and this also was according to Scripture.
5Afterwards He appeared to Peter, then to the twelve, and they all saw Him and touched Him.
6Then more than five hundred believers saw Him at one time, and although some of them have died, most of them are still alive.
7Next, He appeared to James, His own stepbrother, and finally, just before he ascended, to all the apostles at one time.
8Last of all, He appeared to me. I saw Him with my own eyes and He taught me for three years just as He taught the apostles. As far as I know, I was the last one having this privilege.

Christ's Resurrection

1My brothers, I now want to say something about the good news, which I've shared with you, which you've accepted and on which you have taken your stand.
2It is through the gospel of Jesus Christ that you are saved. There are some things that you need to keep in mind. If you don't, your faith has no meaning.
3What I've shared with you I didn't originate. I received it just as you did. The fact remains and always will that Christ died for our sins according to Scripture.

7Next, he appeared to James, His own stepbrother. And finally, just before He ascended, He appeared to all the apostles one more time.
8Last of all, He appeared to me. I saw Him with my own eyes and he taught me for three years just as He taught the apostles. As far as I know, I was the last one to have this privilege.

The Good News Explained

1-2. My brothers and sisters, I want to say something else about the good news I shared with you. You accepted it, and because of Jesus you are saved. But you must hold on to what I taught you, or your faith will mean nothing.
3-6. I passed on to you the gospel I re-ceived. The fact is that Jesus died for our sins according to Scripture. He was buried and rose from the grave, as prophesied. He appeared to Peter, then to the apostles, and, after that, to more than 500 believers. Many of these are still living.
7-8. Next Jesus appeared to His step-brother James, and then to all the disciples. Last of all He appeared to me and taught me as He did the apostles.
