Baxter printed the Authorized Version and then a paraphrase (when necessary).
Mark 1:9-13
Baxter does not offer any paraphrase on these verses. However, his Notes are included.
9(AV) And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.
(Baxter - note) N. Qu.Did Christ posess Repentance for the Remission of Sins? If not how was he capable of John's Baptism? Answ. He was not baptized to the same uses as other men, but as owing John's Baptism, and the coming of the Kingdom of God. As a General will wear the same Colours with his Soldiers, though theirs signifie subjection to him.
10(AV) And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:
(Baxter - note) see on Matt. 3
11(AV) And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
(Baxter - note) N. God from Heaven preached the Gospel at Christ's Baptism.
12(AV) And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness.
13(AV) And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.
(Baxter - note) N. 1. To conquer Temptation is to conquer Satan. 2. Angels brought him meat at the end of the forty days.
John 1:1-5
1(AV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2(AV) The same was in the beginning with God.
(Baxter) The WORD (which hath been since incarnate) was in the Beginning before the world was made; And this WORD was with God, yea the WORD was God. Thus this same WORD was in the Beginning of Time, and causality with God, being God..
3(AV) All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
(Baxter) He was a causal beginning to the whole Creation; for all things were made by him: nothing was made without him by the Father, in creating or forming the World.
4(AV) In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
(Baxter) Being GOD and one with Father, he was especially LIFE, even in and with the Father, the Infinite, Eternal, self-living God; and so he was Radically and Communicatively LIFE to the World; even Intellectual Life, by which he is the LIGHT of man, as Intellectual and as Taught by Revelation. //Note, it is usual with the Scriptures and School Divines to ascribe by some eminency of attribution, LIFE and POWER to the Father, LIGHT and WISDOM to the Son, and LOVE, JOY, and PERFECTIONS to the Holy Ghost; yet so that the same also are attributed to each person in Common: And so the WORD is said here to have Life as one with the Father, and yet eminently to be this LIFE by way if Intellective LIGHT and Illumination.
5(AV) And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
(Baxter) And this LIGHT shineth communicatively unto this darkened World; which receiving it but according to the mode and disposition of the receivers, through their wilful resistance, receiveth the Illumination and Teaching so defectively, as that most (in Judea and elsewhere) remain in darkness still.
1 Corinthians 15:1-8
1(AV) Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2(AV) By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3(AV) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4(AV) And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
5(AV) And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
6(AV) After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.
7(AV) After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
8(AV) And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
