Gospel of John - A Contemporary Translation - 1969
A Contemporary Translation (ACT) was the preliminary name for what eventually became the New International Version. This sample booklet was published by the New York Bible Society in 1969. In it, the Committee on Bible translations says, this is a "tentative translation embodying the principles and policies of ACT. Constructive criticism is welcomed and should be directed to the Committee on Bible Translation in care of the New York Bible Society."

Gospel of John - Transition Edition
This publication represents a transition between the name "A Contemporary Translation" and the "New International Version." The text is copyright 1969 which means it is the "A Contemporary Translation" listed above. Also the cover and title page design are very similar to the "A Contemporary Translation." However, the translation name is now given as "New International Version" with the words "A Contemporary Translation" given as the sub-title.

Gideon Edition - 1983
The editions distributed by The Gideons had the following changes:
1. Footnotes were removed.
2. Some alternate readings in the footnotes were incorporated into the text (John 1:14, 18, 3:16, 18; Acts 13:33; Hebrews 1:5, 5:5; 1 John 4:9).
3. Verses which were found only in the footnotes in the original NIV were incorporated into the Gideons text (Matthew 17:21, 18:11, 23:14; Mark 7:16, 9:44, 9:46, 11:26, 15:28; Luke 17:36, 23:17; John 5:4; Acts 8:37, 15:34, 28:29; Romans 16:24).

Scripture text in single column and bold print, which is way better to read than the eye- inflaming print in the NIE (above); all poetic parts, Psalms etc. in ciolometric print; no extras except paragraph headings. Appendixes start with page 2; Scripture text with p. 52.
In the "Acknowledgements" we read: " The followin changes [are] incorporated in this special edition:
"1. The omission of the footnotes in both the Old and New Testaments (which formed an integral part of the original translation).
2. The incorporation into the text in the following instances of certain alternative readings which formed part of the footnotes in the original translation: John 1.14, 18; John 3:16, 18; Acts 13:33; Hebrews 1:5; Hebrews 5:5 and 1 John 4:9.
3. The incorporation into the text of the New Testament of certain verses which formed part of the footnotes in the original translation. These verses have been placed in corner brackets." [Just to name a few: Mat. 6:13b and the "comma Iohanneum" 1 John 5:7, to incorporate readings that are borrowed from the Majority text.]
Birnbaum's remark: Not clear is since when Gideons in Britain had the "special NIV" printed. This 2012 edition was edited after (!) the publication of the 2011 update of the NIV. Other than in the U.S. predecessor NIE, the British Gideons have clearly pointed out, that there are a textual differences between the standard NIV and their "modification".

Revised 2011 editions
Updated NIV Released - The Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) is the body of scholars with responsibility for overseeing the text of the New International Version of the Bible. They have released an update to the New International Version that is available on-line at their web-site. Printed editions are now available in many different formats and bindings.
The 2011 edition title page does not indicate that it is the updated edition. The surest way to distinguish the 2011 edition from the previous editions is to check the copyright page.
