Richard E. Friedman wrote the “Preface & Acknowledgements“, dated Jerusalem, April 1998. The Introduction, 54 pp, comprises 1. The Recovery of the Work, 2. Reading of the Work. Seven pp are "About the Translation"; therein we read among others,
»I have translated the Masoretic text (MT) generally, with only a few changes based on Greek or Qumran (Dead Sea Scroll) versions, none of which is crucial to the points that I am emphasizing elsewhere in the book.«
Ten pages "Afterword", 18 pp "Textual Notes", 62 pp "Appendix", »The purpose of the Appendix is to provide a more detailed treatment of the evidence for the unity and antiquity of the work that I have attributed to the first great writer of prose (…)« – Ten more pages are Notes and bibliographical information.

In the first paragraph of his Introduction R. E. Friedman sums up the chapter selections he made from the Torah and Prophets books (J–source):
»This hidden book was originally a united story, but it was cut up by the Bible´s editors, and then other stories, laws, and poetry were spliced into it and around it. And so the divided pieces of this saga are now spread out through nine books of the Bible, from Genesis to the first two chapters of Kings. What I have done is to separate the original texts from all those other writings that have surrounded it (…)«

Richard Elliot Friedman, born Rochester N.Y (U.S.A.) May 5, 1946, Professor & biblical scholar.
