Comments The first Catholic English language stereotyped edition of the Bible in America. Frequently reprinted by a series of publishers over the next 40 years. Eugene Cummiskey (1792? -1860) was an Irish immigrant who greatly expanded Catholic publishing in America in response to increasing immigration. This first stereotyped edition contains many anomalies. After completing the Old Testament through Esther in one type size, the remainder of the OT is in a larger type size. For the NT, the type reverts to the smaller size. Copies were issued with two different NT title pages, one dated 1824, the other dated 1831. The engraved title before the general title (depicting the finding of Moses) may have either of the following phrases after the words, The Holy Bible: some pages read "Translated from the Latin Vulgate," the standard phrase for Catholic translations. Others, strangely, read "Translated from the Original Tongues," the standard phrase for contemporary King James Versions.
Recent Sales A copy with a defective binding, with the 1831 NT title page, and the "Original Tongues" engraved title sold on Ebay on November 4, 2012 for $316.67 (Ebay No. 290802030212).
