Description Standards

One of the challenges in Bible Collecting is accurately describing a given volume. Even the contents can be difficult because different groups use the same word for different things. For example, a Catholic Bible contains different books from a Protestant Bible and both are different from a Jewish Bible.

The following list is an attempt to address this challenge and provide a standard list for the contents of various biblical books.

BP - Bible Protestant - Complete Protestant Bible containing Old Testament & New Testament
BA - Bible+Apocrypha - Complete Protestant Bible containing Old Testament , New Testament & Apocrypha
BC - Bible Catholic - Bible approved by Catholic Authorities (Old Testament including Deuterocanonical Books & New Testament)
BO - Orthodox Bible - Bible approved by Orthodox Church Authorities
BH - Hebrew Bible - Jewish Bible (Same contents as the Protestant Old Testament but in a different order)

NT - New Testament - Twenty Seven New Testament books considered canonical by Protestants, Catholic, and Orthodox Christians
GS - Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke, John (Christian)
EP - Epistles - All New Testament Epistles including Hebrews (Christian)
PA - Pauline Epistles - Paul’s Epistles: Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians Colossians, 1 & 2 Thessalonians, 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon (and possibly Hebrews)

OT - Old Testament - Protestant Old Testament (same books as the Hebrew Bible but in a different order)
CO - Catholic Old Testament - Old Testament including Deuterocanonical Books
AP - Apocrypha - Protestant term for books accepted by Catholic and Orthodox church but usually reject by Protestant Churches.

TR or PT - Torah (Jewish) or Pentateuch (Christian) - First section in the Hebrew Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
MG - Megilloth (Jewish) - Five Festal Scrolls: Ruth, Esther, Lamentations, Song of Solomon, Ecclesiastes
NV - Nevi'im or Prophets (Jewish) - Second Section in Hebrew Bible: Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and 12 minor prophets (Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi)
KT - Kethubim or Writings (Jewish) - Third section in Hebrew Bible: Psalms, Lamentations, Song of Songs, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Ezra, Nehemiah, Chronicles, Ruth, Esther, Daniel

SL - Selections - Condensed, abbreviated or selected sections from a larger work.
Other - List specific books included
