Ariel Bloch is professor emeritus of Near Eastern studies at the University of California at Berkeley. An expert on Semitic linguistice, he has published books and articles on classical and modern Arabic, biblical and modern Hebrew, Ugaritic, Akkadian, and Aramaic. Among his awards are a National Endowment for the Hummanities senior fellowship, the president of the University of California's research fellowship in the humanities, and a National Science Foundation grant.
Chana Bloch is a poet, translator, scholar, and literary critic. She has published two books of poems, The Secrets of the Tribe and The Past Keeps Changing, several translation of Dahlia Ravikovitch and Yehuda Amichai, and a critical study of George Herbert. Her awards include a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in poetry, a National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship, Columbia University's Translation Center Award, and the Book of the Year Award of the Conference on Christianity and Literature. She is a professor of English and director of the creative writing program and Mills College.
