American Standard Version

When the English Revised Version was being prepared, the British revisers invited Americans to make contributions and early editions of the Revised Version contain an appendix which lists the American preferences. The Americans agreed to wait twenty years before publishing a version with all their suggested changed. Therefore this edition was not published until 1901. In 1929 the copyright was obtained by the International Council of Religious Education and most editions bear this copyright.

One distinctive feature of this translation is the use of the word Jehovah for God's sacred name.

The Revised Standard Version is a revision of this text.

Comments: (based on information from Hills 2169) When the ABS was founded in 1816, its constitution limited distribution of the Scriptures to the Authorized or King James Version. After the publication of the ERV and ASV, there were requests for the ABS to publish these versions as well. In 1904, the consitution was changed to permit distribution of the two revisions. The first of these was published in 1905. Therefore, this edition reflects an important change for the ABS. Also, based on this information, this was published in 1905 or later (but before 1929).

Comments: This edition is not to be confused with the "Emphasised Bible" produced by Joseph Bryant Rotherham (Hills 2078 & 2083) at about the same time. It is very similar to "red letter" editions but without the expense of a second ink color. Again the date of 1901 is taken from the copyright page, but this is probably slightly later (see Hills 2200 for more information).
