The Preface (3 pp) written in Canterbury, Feb. 12, 1869, states: »It seemed to the Reviser, and to some others, that the time was ripe for an effort to be made to publish the English New Testament in a form more consonant to the new ascertained ancient Greek text, and with corrections of inadequate renderings. (…) He utterly repudiates for his revision any aim to be adopted in any place as a substitute for the Authorized Version. (…) His wish mainly is to keep open the great question of an authoritative Revision.«

W[illiam] T[homas] B[ullock], the editor, wrote a two-paged preface, dated Kensington, June, 1872, as "the late Dean of Canterbury“, Henry Alford had passed away on Jan 12, 1871. His plan to write a commentary on the Old Testament, with the first volume on the Pentateuch, had come to an end with the 25th chapter of Exodus: »It is due both to his memory and to those whose instruction he laboured, that the unfinished volume should be published exactly as he left it. Pains have been taken to make the publication as accurate as possible.«
